Δ

March 13, 7pm
SomArt @ The Hive, Somerville

Δ inverts the audience and performer and then turns all of it inside out. While holding two truths at the same time, can you also handle a third? Δ is a trio performed to a dedicated sound score created by Chris Konopka and projection that integrates with the performance via plexiglass panels centered in the space.

The panels reflect the inner landscapes and outer realities of the performers while paying attention to the audience’s own perception. By positioning the panels at one end of the space, they serve as thematic references and mirror triplicates of reality amplified. The reflections from the panels are echos of resonance and sometimes integration of the assembly of when everything comes together at once and then departs.

The Δ is the difference of perspectives: of each performer, of audience, of media. Every one being a “truth” which is informed by environment and influence. Inverting the audience and performer creates an almost impossibility of viewership, of perspective. One has to choose to witness a perspective by passively obscuring the other or the other two. It’s in this choice making the audience is never understanding all perspectives at once. It would be impossible.

Chapman and Konopka work at either end of performance: in dance and in sound; while meeting in the center in video and projection. Callie Chapman danced with Prometheus Dance for 20 years as well as choreographed for Zoe Dance during the same time. Creating and dancing in work that centers dreams and relational themes in community and as individuals brings perspective of Chapman’s unique style into performance. Konopka questions the frame and what’s behind it, weaving sound into a multi-layered experience which really doesn’t have boundaries.
