“TRIPTYCH”

12/12 @ 7:30pm

An Immersive Dance + Performance Concert

Featuring works by Callie Chapman & Chris Konopka, Emily Beattie, and Marcela Correa (Ecuador) TRIPTYCH brings together three boundary-pushing artists in an evening that reimagines what performance can be. Each work is immersive in nature—dismantling the familiar structures of stage and audience, idea and execution, process and presentation. Callie Chapman & Chris Konopka, Emily Beattie, and Marcela Correa come together in TRIPTYCH with new works that question form without needing to resolve it. Established and unafraid to defy convention, they meet here to shake loose what’s expected of contemporary dance. Their performances unfold as études rather than grand statements: charged experiments in perception, presence, and being witnessed.

Marcela Correa

Osea at Sea In the darkness, and with her forehead to the ground, a woman drags a wrapped bundle across the floor: everything is black. She is followed by soft lanterns as she unfolds a huge piece of fabric that opens from her feet —velvet shaped like insect wings. She stops, opens her bundle; inside only bones: some ribs, a possible femur, a pelvic fragment. She plays again and again with these bones, until she learns to recognize them as a part of her. The theme: death — the necessary journey to understand its presence and embrace it.

As part of the project Waves from Another Sea, directed by Esteban Donoso for his PhD at the University of Toronto, Marcela Correa reconstructs La Huesudita, a work by Carolina Vásconez. Waves from Another Sea was presented in Quito, Ecuador, at Teatro Malayerba in early 2024.

Creator: Marcela Correa, based on La Huesudita by Carolina Vásconez

Emily Beattie

Emily Beattie is a contemporary dance artist based in Somerville. Drawing from her rural southern roots, she unwinds narratives using text and movement. Her entanglements with technology in performance reflect her time spent here in the northeast. She’s grateful for the decades of practice and exchange with other artists from around the world. Emily is honored to have received grants from the Boston Foundation, Massachusetts Cultural Council, New England Foundation for the Arts and a Somerville Arts Council Fellowship. She holds a BFA from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee and an MFA from UCLA’s department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance. She’s a mother. She’s somebody.

Nobody is a new solo performance that processes disconnection from ancestry and future within parenthood.

Callie Chapman & Chris Konopka

Chris and Callie explore the tension and harmony between opposing perceptions—holding two truths simultaneously. Suspended between the illusion of binary choice, the piece invites the merging of polarities, revealing new truths and expanded possibilities through the introduction of an unexpected cross-thread.In this immersive section of TRIPTYCH, the performance unfolds across three plexiglass panels. A single performer moves fluidly among them, while projections animate the surfaces, blurring the boundaries between presence and image. The audience is free to move within the space, choosing their vantage point, and discovering the piece from multiple perspectives—each choice reshaping the experience of duality and convergence.
